It began over drinks

Today’s post is a response for the prompt What Does This Remind You Of #6 , which is a link up over on A Novel Quest.

Paul likes coffee and I like tea.

That’s what this photo reminds me of.

It reminds me of mornings when we would sit on an old wooden bench outside the music building before a class we had together. I would get to school early because my mom would drop me off on her way to work. He would meet me at “our bench” before our 9:15 a.m. class so we could hang out before our one shared college class. This was fall quarter of my fourth year in college and his last quarter as a student.

The bench itself and the people on it remind me of that time, but thinking back, I don’t think we ever had a coffee or tea together those mornings.

It does have me thinking about our first ever date together. We went to Starbucks. He ordered Chai Tea first and I got the same. I thought it was incredibly endearing.

Let’s rewind a little bit. I had kissed him while drunk a few days before. Then we kissed sober the next day. Then we decided to date, but he didn’t specifically ask me out. Everything was happening all out of whack. That’s Saturday night to Monday afternoon for you.

Monday night (or maybe Tuesday) there was an event happening on campus called Pizza with the Presidents. I was at the event for a class and he was there for video coverage for the newspaper. I was interviewing someone after when he texted me and asked if I wanted to hang out. I was so excited that he asked, so of course I said yes.

Talking to him was easy, even though I was nervous. We talked about our families, school and the newspaper, I’m sure. One of the only solid conversations points I remember I that he told me his dad would be joining his band. I thought that was the sweetest thing. He opened the door on the way out and held my hand. I was struck by how nice it felt. I felt both comfortable and excited to be with him.

It’s hard to pin point when Paul and I first started to fall in love, but thinking back, I would have to say it all began over drinks. We broke the ice over alcohol with friends and warmed up to each other while sipping tea in a Starbucks on a winter night just a few days later.

  1. Oh my goodness I love this post! So sweet, Erin thank you so much for participating! And I love this: “Let’s rewind a little bit. I had kissed him while drunk a few days before. Then we kissed sober the next day.” LOL! I laughed so hard when I read this, because I can totally relate. I’m so happy this prompt churned out such a great reflection and story! :)

  2. That was so lovely! I found you through Monique’s prompt, I just wrote my own on it. How fun to see all the different variations on what coffee means to people. A really great read, thank you for sharing.

I would love to hear what you have to say. Leave me a comment and I'll try to write back soon.
